At Thornfield, we provide specialized structural engineering design services to clients in several areas. We are based in Chilliwack and regularly serve the Fraser Valley and Vancouver, with projects across British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Steel Stud

Thornfield Consulting's team has extensive experience in cold-formed steel (steel stud), with a portfolio that includes subway stations, hospitals, schools, daycares, and correctional facilities. We've contributed to the design of three major hospitals and continue to support over ten active steel stud contracting firms across a wide range of complex commercial and institutional projects. Our focus is always on constructability, cost-efficiency, and performance—pushing cold-formed steel to its full potential while staying grounded in practical realities on site.

Thornfield Consulting's team regularly designs structural steel systems. When a project demands longer spans, higher loads, or complex support conditions, we utilize structural steel to its full potential.
We work closely with several structural steel fabricators to ensure our designs are buildable, efficient, and aligned with the architectural intent. That collaboration means fewer surprises in the shop and fewer headaches on site.

Matthew

P.Eng., P.E., B.Eng.

Matthew Elgersma brings years of engineering experience to clients through Thornfield Consulting. With a dedication to streamlining processes, Matthew develops innovative design methodologies and harnesses cutting-edge software, including self-developed tools, to optimize time and resources in design and on-site. With experience across Canada and the U.S., he brings a sharp eye for detail and a commitment to client service.

SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

Nikita

M.Eng., P.Eng.

Nikita is a Senior Structural Engineer with over 15 years of experience in Canada and abroad, specializing in structural steel, cold-formed steel, concrete, and timber design. He’s worked on commercial, residential, agricultural, and industrial projects, including water and wastewater facilities, energy generation structures, and retaining systems. With extensive expertise in finite element modeling and design codes such as NBCC, CSA, ACI, and AISC, Nikita brings a balanced approach of technical precision and practical constructability to every project.

BIM TECHNICIAN / STRUCTURAL DRAFTER

Marina

M.Eng.

Marina brings both academic excellence and practical skill to her role at Thornfield. With a Master’s in Building Engineering and a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, she combines engineering knowledge with hands-on drafting and modeling expertise. She specializes in AutoCAD and Revit, producing precise drawings.

Marina’s and attention to detail make her an invaluable part of Thornfield’s engineering and construction support team.

DRAFTING TECHNICIAN

Yuliana

B.A. Architecture

Yuliana is a Drafting Technician with experience in residential, commercial, and healthcare projects. She holds a Bachelor in Architecture and is skilled in AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, SketchUp, and BIM tools, producing clear plans, sections, and 3D models. Her architectural background provides a strong foundation in construction methods, ensuring accuracy and clarity in her work.

FIELD REVIEW REPRESENTATIVE

Martin

B.Sc.

Martin holds a Bachelor of Science and spent his early career working with several consulting firms, gaining experience across a range of sectors. After working many years in the construction industry, he now assists Thornfield by providing engineering reviews. Martin’s mix of technical knowledge and hands-on construction expertise helps ensure our designs translate smoothly to the job site.

STRUCTURAL DESIGNER

Karnish

Karnish was first introduced to the team (and steel stud) during his award-winning second-year Civil Engineering industry project at BCIT, which earned recognition as best project. After completing his Civil Engineering diploma, he joined Thornfield and has continued to contribute to our projects while preparing to return to BCIT for his third year. Karnish brings fresh energy, curiosity, and technical skill to the team, supporting steel stud and structural steel design with precision and creativity.

Jolene

Jolene is often the first point of contact at Thornfield, welcoming clients and connecting them with the right resources. She helps bring in new projects, answers calls, and keeps overhead activities moving smoothly. From coordinating day-to-day tasks to making sure the team has what they need, Jolene plays a key role in keeping Thornfield responsive and client-focused.
